Desert Retreat

Located in the beautiful surroundings of palm trees, green vegetation and the magnificent dunes of Alghat in Riyadh, is this 10,000 sq. m of a getaway location to relax from the hectic life of the city. The site surroundings are meant to connect the residents to nature and its timeless beauty.

The project is designed around an organic spine that runs throughout the site, the suites are placed on its either sides. This green spine follows an organic flow with landscape pockets emerging after each suite to create a nature-driven experience. There are a variety of suites with unique orientations towards the outdoors for guests and family members. Whereas, the central communal space makes a grand statement with its design that goes beyond its standard norms to provide luxury, comfort, and privacy with a contemporary take.

The project was designed to host guests and family members alike over an extensive area of 4500 sq. m. There are two separate entries for guests and family members to ensure visual privacy. The guest zone includes dining, kitchen, and many other recreational spaces to encourage communal interactions. A wall merged with a staircase for the guest block separates the family zone.

The communal space for the family overlooks the beautiful chain of mountains and brings in its scenic charm. With outdoor gardens with interactive seating, that encourages experiencing the pristine views of nature. The family villas include a common living space that opens up to the scenic outdoors followed by a rooftop lounge on the upper level. A gaming room, kitchen and dining are located in close proximity for this space.

Following a contemporary-minimal approach in the architecture, the suites maintain the use of local stone and plaster. The concept of minimalism follows in interiors with walls in pastel shades, built-in seating areas made out of concrete, and the use of natural wood. The interior layout allows flexibility in design to accommodate larger groups. Surrounded by ample natural greens, the interior design promotes outdoor living with wider openings, green pockets, and shading elements over the walkways throughout the green spine. The design incorporates sustainable features; be it the orientation that allows ample natural light and ventilation or the use of local construction methods and materials. The landscaped gardens use native plant species to promote conscious living.

Resonating with the site surroundings of natural trees with the backdrop of the scenic mountains; this family retreat captures the organic flow of nature to create a getaway home that you would not want to leave behind. Breathing in nature’s beauty, this retreat transports you to the serene countryside living with a sustainable and contextual approach.
